Microsoft MSDigimall PC and Phone Selector Silverlight application

Worked within a tight timeframe to take an existing US developed Silverlight application – Microsoft Laptop Scout* – localise it for 8 separate Western European markets, then integrate it into the Microsoft Digimall site, along with additional improvements to the Digimall site and backend.

* Laptop Scout is a rich internet application designed to assist users to choose a suitable laptop based on their needs.

  • Rebuilt existing Silverlight app to allow for localisation.
  • Integrated Silverlight app, site, and backend WCF service into Digimall ASP.Net site.
  • Updated Digimall ASP.Net admin interface to allow laptop details to be maintained.
  • Created Windows Service to update Digimall pricing data on a scheduled basis.
  • Generated multi-lingual assets in Photoshop.

After the successful launch of that project, developed an extension to the Silverlight app to include Microsoft Mobile Phones.

  • Generated an initial prototype for sign-off using the Sketchflow capabilities in Expression Blend.
  • Developed the full Silverlight application, which features a 360 degree view of each phone.
  • Added enhancements to the Windows Service to import and process data and images on a nightly basis from the Microsoft Mobile web service and make this available to the Silverlight application via a WCF service.

These projects used a wide variety of technologies including: Test Driven Development in Visual Studio 2008 with MSTest, Silverlight 3, ASP.Net 3.5, Windows Communication Framework (WCF), Linq to SQL, SQL Server 2005, DI/IOC with Ninject, Mocking with Moq, Expression Blend + Sketchflow, and Photoshop.

Marae Table Interactive 3D Touchscreen exhibit

The Marae Table is an interactive touchscreen exhibit developed by Lumen Digital Studios installed in the newly redeveloped facilities at Te Puia, New Zealand’s second most visited tourist attraction.

On the table itself is a scale model of the three most important buildings on the Marae Atea. On each of the four sides of the table is a large (24″) touchscreen, showing the interactive.

The interactive uses a touchscreen interface to allow visitors to Te Puia to uncover the deeper meanings and significance of each building and its associated carvings and artwork. It does this by flying in to, out of, and around photo-realistic representations of each building, showing points of significance in more detail. Additionally, descriptive text is displayed and a video is played when any of the touch points is activated.

My role on the Marae table was as a technical artist. This involved planning and gathering resources to photorealistically recreate the buildings of the Marae Atea in a 3D modeling application, and then to display these in an interactive manner inside a real-time 3D engine.

Aside from the design mockups for each screen and editing the videos, the entire interactive was created by me, from panoramic reference photography, modeling and texturing the buildings, to writing the scripting code for the 3D engine to display and interact with them.

I used Realviz Imagemodeler to calibrate the reference photos, then modeled and textured the buildings in Maya, before exporting to the Hyperion 3D engine, where interactivity was added using the Lua scripting language.
